Looking for a cheap and pretty boutique hotel in Phuket? Even Leonardo DiCaprio has stayed at the Memory at On On Hotel.
I’m not a big fan of hotel chains. Sure, the amenities are mostly nice – but somehow it reminds me too much of work, because we basically stay in bigger hotels with the crew. And when I’m on vacation, I tend to look for more unusual places to stay, like The Memory at On On Hotel* in Phuket.
I landed in Phuket at noon and was actually just passing through on my way to Koh Phi Phi. Half a day should be enough to get from the airport to the boat dock. But somehow it all went wrong, I found myself in a totally overpriced cab to Phuket town – and way too late to catch the ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi.
Welcome to my travel blog
Hey, I’m Tatiana and I’m the blogger behind The Happy Jetlagger. Since 2014, I’ve been sharing my personal travel stories on this blog. I don’t have a big team behind me, so I’m pretty much a one-person show: I’ve researched and tested all recommendations myself.
So a hotel was needed, preferably in Phuket City – and The Memory at On On Hotel was just right. The location turned out to be absolutely perfect: there was a great night market just around the corner in the evening!

The location is perfect, right in the heart of Phuket City’s Old Town. Although Phuket was never really a true colony like Macau, for example, the Portuguese used to have a very close trading relationship with Phuket. In addition, there were many Chinese immigrants who also left traces of their culture, and so you now find in Thai Phuket an old town full of sino-portuguese colonial architecture. A probably unique mix!
The Memory at On On Hotel is decorated in the spirit of this colonial architecture and is close to all the attractions in Phuket Old Town. Around the corner, for example, there’s a great Night Street Food Market on Sundays.
The rooms are simple, but comfortably furnished. But the real charm is the atmosphere of the hotel itself. The Memory at On On Hotel is simply a sight in itself. I later learned that the Memory at On On even served as the backdrop for the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio!
