Designed entirely on the drawing board by architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília became Brazil’s new capital in 1960. The planned city replaced Rio de Janeiro at that time, and fascinated even then with its futuristic urban planning. To this day, Brasília is a popular destination among architecture fans: Niemeyer’s modern buildings still dominate the cityscape.
