Celebrating Christmas in Mallorca is for many island lovers a pretty good alternative to dull and cold holidays at home. But what if you are suddenly overcome by a longing for the Christmas spirit on Mallorca? Then you should treat yourself to a visit to the Christmas market in the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol<\/strong> in the middle of Palma de Mallorca, mulled wine included. <\/p>\n\n

Christmas market in Mallorca <\/h2>\n\n

Huge markets with mulled wine stands on every corner are more at home in Germany than in Mallorca. In the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol in Palma, however, a really idyllic Christmas market takes place every year during the Christmas season, which can already keep up well. Even with live music<\/strong> and romantic lighting! From bratwursts to Thai curries to Argentinian empanadas, there’s a small but diverse culinary offering. Even a cup of mulled wine is included in the price of admission. (It’s rather mediocre by its quality, but still a nice gesture). <\/p>\n\n

Celebrating Christmas in Spain: Holidays & customs<\/h2>\n\n

In contrast to Germany, children get their presents on the day of the Three Kings<\/strong> on January 6 in Spain. So if you don’t get into festive mode until Christmas Eve, you can enjoy Mallorca a little longer, because the Christmas season doesn’t end so abruptly here with the last day of Christmas. However, there is only one Christmas Day<\/strong>, December 25.<\/p>\n\n

In general, Christmas is not also celebrated as extremely contemplative as in Germany, but rather seen as a somewhat more cheerful family celebration<\/strong>. The Christmas market in the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol therefore looks more like a fair with quite a few fairy lights – and yet: Somehow the atmosphere really comes alive in the Plaza Mayor with Christmas live music. <\/p>\n\n

In typical Spanish fashion, there is also a special offer for children<\/strong>: a bouncy castle is hidden in one of the small patios and in the “Casita del Pap\u00e1 Noel” the little ones can have their picture taken with Santa Claus. <\/p>\n\n

When is the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol Christmas Market? <\/h2>\n\n

The Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol Christmas Market is usually held on weekends and around the holidays. December 6 and 8 are also public holidays in Spain. (Constitution Day and the Conception of the Virgin Mary). You can even celebrate the New Year here on New Year’s Eve. <\/p>\n\n

Is it worth it? <\/h2>\n\n

To be honest, some stands are more reminiscent of funfair booths or consumer fairs (Tupperware at a Christmas market certainly takes some getting used to for German tastes). The market itself is relatively small. On the other hand, the central Plaza Mayor, which is decorated with lights all around, has an absolute Christmas atmosphere.<\/strong> At the latest, when the artificial snow trickles over the square in the form of soap foam! I thought it was nice and would recommend the market to anyone who wants some festive vibes. One more tip:<\/strong> It’s best to leave the high heels at home, the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol is located on a slope and most of it has pretty rustic cobblestones!<\/p>\n\n

Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol in Palma de Mallorca<\/h2>\n\n

The market is located in part of the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol, a kind of open-air museum<\/strong> with replicas of famous Spanish landmarks. The site is set up like a small village: narrow streets lead through the most diverse regions of Spain in just a few minutes’ walk. During the day and in season, the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol is also a popular destination for cruise ship tourists; but Palma’s only hop-on hop-off bus also stops right outside. (Which is convenient, because the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol is just outside the city center in the Son Espa\u00f1olet neighborhood).<\/p>\n\n

Tip for the summer season: With the \u2b95Hop-On Hop-Off Bus<\/a><\/strong>* you can also continue from here to Castell Bellver<\/strong>. From there you have a fantastic view over Palma!(Note: Currently the Pueblo Espa\u00f1ol stop is out of service due to the pandemic, but I suspect it will certainly be reactivated for the next season).<\/p>\n\n
