When it comes to hotels I’m not a big fan of hotel chains. Not that I don’t appreciate the ameneties of a bigger hotel, but in the end it still reminds me of work, as we as crews always stay there. In my vacation, I rather try to seek the unusual. And that how I stranded one day at The Memory at On On in Phuket.
Landed at Phuket airport by plane at noon, I thought that would be enough time to get the boat in the late afternoon to Koh Phi Phi, but I was wrong. I didn’t notice before that there wasn’t any decent public transportation at the airport to get me to the harbour, and Phuket town was far away, too. In the end, I found myself once again in an overpriced cab (I seem to attract the nastiest drivers in Thailand, that’s for sure!), hours later – and too late to get the boat.
So I looked for a place to stay the night in Phuket City, because it was near the harbour and I wanted to avoid the touristy Patong Beach. The Memory at On On was the right choice.
Read what other people say about The Memory at On On Hotel:
It’s located in the Old Town, the cultural heart of Phuket City. Although it has never been a real colony, the portuguese once had a strong commercial bond with Phuket. Also influenced by numerous Chinese immigrants, the Old Town is full of sino-portuguese colonial architecture – a rare mixture. If you stay at the Memory, you will have everything nearby – and if you’re lucky, you can enjoy the night street food markt right around the corner on the main street, which takes place on weekends.
The rooms are comfortable, but what I loved most was the atmosphere of the hotel itself, it’s decorated with so much dedication, it’s a sight for itself. Later, I learned that the Memory also appeared in the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo Di Caprio! And don’t miss the delicious breakfast!
