Bangkok: The Golden Buddha in Wat Traimit

Aktualisiert am: 09/03/2024

A golden Buddha in the middle of Bangkok, the city of the most beautiful temples. Even if you are not particularly interested in religion, you should not miss out on the biggest highlights such as Wat Pra Kaew or Wat Pho.

Where to find the Golden Buddha in Bangkok

The Golden Buddha in Bangkok is located in the Wat Traimit temple and can be perfectly combined with a visit to nearby Chinatown – and a few steep steps even provide a little fitness factor (for those who haven’t done enough sightseeing). So it’s a sporty climb up the steps to Wat Traimit, and inside there really is a golden Buddha, pure gold, shimmering and gleaming.

The Golden Buddha in Bangkok: made entirely of gold!
Welcome to my travel blog!

Facts about the Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit in Bangkok

Incidentally, the Buddha is not only called the “Golden Buddha”, it is actually made almost entirely of gold! Weighing over 5 tons and worth around 250 million dollars, it just stands there, completely open, without any security precautions in the small temple at the top of the entire temple building. Fascinating. And the impression is confirmed once again that 1. Thais have an incredible amount of respect for their religion and 2. stealing is absolutely frowned upon and people feel much safer in this respect than in many other countries.

Important rules for visiting the temple

As in all temples, you have to remember to take your shoes off and cover your shoulders and knees if you want to see the Golden Buddha up close. After all, temples are religious sites that need to be respected. Even though the weather in Thailand often calls for lighter clothing, you should avoid shorts and tank tops when visiting a temple. However, as in most temples that are popular with tourists, Wat Traimit also has a small clothing stall with scarves and shawls, which you can help yourself to for a small donation. The stall is right at the top of the temple.

Chinatown in Bangkok

From Wat Traimit, by the way, you also have a great view of the gateway to Bangkok’s Chinatown, an exciting part of town that you should look at right away in conjunction with the Golden Buddha.
